Embodied carbon of concrete in buildings, Part 2: are the messages accurate?

چکیده

This paper is the second output of a project that examines embodied greenhouse gas emissions (‘embodied carbon’) from use concrete in buildings. In current absence either regulation or widespread industry practice quantified carbon assessment, it seems likely messaging will play powerful role influencing designers’ perceptions and decisions. Using UK as case study, this considers messages about implications buildings professional institutions cement trade body. Three mechanisms through which claimed are significantly reduced identified: thermal mass, durability, carbonation. By assessing each these turn against available scientific literature, shown they to have far more limited effect on total impacts than suggested. More accuracy needed organisations if real reductions be achieved. Practice relevance whole life assessment for buildings, different materials strong impact. The recommends should accurate with sharing. particular claims durability carbonation effective mechanisms, suggest low option, reconsidered. Meanwhile designers excellent advice being produced by undertake whole-life calculations ensure lowest design. These include best estimate future trends towards warming climates decarbonisation electricity, but also recognise importance immediate effects construction materials. There key policymakers legislating make measurement mandatory.

Measuring the Embodied Carbon Content of Concrete Paving

This paper summarises the outcomes of a PhD research project by Richardson (2009) to measure the embodied carbon content of concrete paving and to reveal the barriers to its accurate measurement. This is a current area of research due to the concerns arising from the anthropogenic emission of carbon dioxide which has been identified as a key cause of climate change. The work was carried out in ...

Estimation and Minimization of Embodied Carbon of Buildings: A Review

Building and construction is responsible for up to 30% of annual global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, commonly reported in carbon equivalent unit. Carbon emissions are incurred in all stages of a building’s life cycle and are generally categorised into operating carbon and embodied carbon, each making varying contributions to the life cycle carbon depending on the building’s characteristics. ...
